Molecular typing and virulence analysis of multidrug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates recovered from Egyptian hospitals

Abstract: Klebsiella pneumonia infection rates have increased dramatically. Molecular typing and virulence analysis are powerful tools that can shed light on Klebsiella pneumonia infections. Whereas 77.7% (28/36) of clinical isolates indicated multidrug resistant (MDR) patterns, 50% (18/36) indicated carpabenem resistance. Gene prevalence for the AcrAB efflux pump (82.14%) was more than that of the mdtK efflux pump (32.14%) in the MDR isolates. FimH-1 and mrkD genes were prevalent in wound and blood isolates. FimH-1 gen… Show more

“…Virulence genes (magA, iucB, iroB, entB, irp1, iroN, kfuBC, rmpA, wcaG, alls, ybtA, ureA, uge, wabG, fimH and mrkD) and capsular serotypes (K1, K2, K5, K20, K54 and K57) of the six K. pneumoniae clinical isolates and K. pneumoniae ATCC 700603 were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Primers for the aforementioned genes are listed in Supplementary Table S1 [21,22]. Positive PCR products were sequenced by Beijing Genomics Institute Technology Co. Ltd. (Shanghai, China).…”

“…Concomitant with this finding, Shawky et al, (2015) from a comparable study conducted in Egypt validated that 86% of their investigated isolates were colistin-sensitive. Outstandingly, Wasfi et al, (2016) and Chiu et al, (2017) disclosed that all of their MDR K. pneumoniae isolates were sensitive to colistin. Nonetheless, Tawfick et al, (2016) mentioned that only 55.8 % of their MDR K. pneumoniae isolates collected from cancer patients at the Egyptian National Cancer Institute were colistin-sensitive.…”

“…This is because K.pneumoniae not only able to colonize human skin as normal flora, it also has a persistent long survival rate in hospitals and environmental surface. Thus, transmission is relatively easy among patients in hospitals through hand contact with hospital care personnel [1][2][3] . To control the wide transmission rate and easy outbreak of K.pneumoniae, many antibiotics have been used as treatment.…”
