Molluscicidal Triterpenoid Glycosides of Dialium guineense

Abstract: The molluscicidal activity of the fruit and leaves of Dialium guineense was found to be due to oleanolic acid saponins, three of which were isolated from the fruit and a fourth from the leaves. The presence of these known saponins in Dialium spp. have not been previously reported, and the molluscicidal activity of 3-O-[β-d-xylopyranosyl]oleanolic acid is here reported for the first time.

“…(Leguminosae) has no significant antimalarial activity in our study except the dichloromethane extract with a moderate activity (IC 50 = 42.1 g/ml) and the total aqueous extract with a low activity (IC 50 = 65.5 g/ml). Odukoya et al (1996) have already reported the molluscicidal activity of the fruits and leaves due to triterpenoid glycosides.…”

“…Partial hydrolysis of polyfoliolide A (1): Compound 1 (1.5 mg) was treated with 5 mg of oxalic acid in 1 mL of MeOH-H 2 O (1 : 1) at 60 8C with reaction monitoring by TLC. After 30 h, the reaction mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3 10 mL) and the EtOAc-soluble fraction purified by normal phase PTLC with the solvent system n-hexane/EtOAc (75 : 25) to yield a solid (0.6 mg), whose spectral data ( 1 H-, 13 C-NMR and MS) and [a] D were identical to those of 3-O-b-D-xylopyranosyloleanolic acid (6) [14], [15]. The aqueous phase was neutralized with saturated Na 2 CO 3 solution and concentrated to yield a white solid which on purification over normal phase PTLC using the solvent system EtOAc/n-BuOH/H 2 O (20 : 70 : 10) furnished the sugar galactose (0.…”
