Molluscs associated with a Sardinian deep water population of Corallium rubrum (Linnι, 1758)

Abstract: Molluscan species living in association with Corallium rubrumcolonies are poorly known. Specimensfound on the branches of red coral colonies located off Capo Caccia (Alghero – SS, West Sardinia,Mediterranean Sea) were studied by analyzing red coral branches collected at a depth of between 100 and120 m; their assemblage was made up of 44 species, all belonging to the classes Gastropoda and Bivalvia. Some data on the geographical distribution, ecology, taxonomy and dominance of these species, bothalive and dead, … Show more

“…Its outer lip bears less main teeth (10–12) and the shell is whitish with about 8 brown zigzag zones of flames (not as spots) [ 35 ]. Danilia costellata was referred from the Mediterranean Sea by Palazzi and Villari [ 45 ], Crocetta and Spanu [ 46 ] and Cossignani et al [ 47 ] as certain, by Vilvens and Heros [ 48 ] as doubtful and Herbert [ 49 ] characterized that of Crocetta and Spanu [ 46 ] as tentative. In contrast, D. tinei was referred from the Mediterranean Sea by many more researchers including Gofas et al [ 35 ], Ghisotti and Steinmann [ 50 ], Cachia et al [ 51 ], Navaro and Capdevila [ 52 ], Scaperrotta et al [ 53 ] and Öztürk et al [ 54 ].…”

“…Denudation can occur through biological (depredation by gastropod molluscs, e.g. Simnia and Coralliophilia species; Crocetta & Spanu 2008) or environmental causes (mortality events and diseases linked to climate warming; see Cerrano et al 2000, Linares et al 2008, Garrabou et al 2009) or due to physical damage (e.g. excessive SCUBA diving activities in particular areas, fishing nets and lines; see Harmelin & Marinopoulos 1994, Tsounis et al 2012, as occurred at our study site.…”

“…Whilst most species seem to be scarce, a Mediterranean species, tentatively identified as Danilia costellata (O.G. Costa, 1861), may be locally abundant in colonies of the gorgonian Corallium rubrum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Crocetta & Spanu 2008). Schepman (1908), Beu & Climo (1974) and De Simone & Kosuge (2010) also reported species living in deep-water coral communities.…”
