Monitoring 60 Years of Land Cover Change in the Marathon Area, Greece

Abstract: This study deals with the landscape evolution reflected in the changes of land cover in the suburban area of Marathon, Attica, Greece. The study was based on remote sensing images covering the time period between 1945 and 2007. Several other types of data were also used, such as a digital terrain model, historical orthophotos, vegetation maps, geological maps, cadastral maps and aerial photos. These types of data were used in order to create the spatial database for the classification/interpretation of land co… Show more

“…A series of studies have been undertaken to model the influences of different factors on changes in vegetation cover [10]. Among them, Hyandye et al [11] determined that variations in precipitation, slope aspect, road network density generate changes in land use.…”

“…The availability of aerial and satellite imagery in recent years and the development and free distribution of powerful GIS software made easier to perform remote sensing inquires over a specific territory (Rocchini et al, 2012) (Tattoni et al, 2010) (Neteler , Mitasova, 2008). Techniques such as image classification are a consolidated method for studying multi-temporal forest evolution (Gaitanis et al, 2015) (Godone et al, 2014) (Gautam et al, 2004).…”

“…According to the studies by [13][14][15], crop and forest resources have been almost completely exhausted all over the world. Thus far, the use of land and the changes in the use of land have been widely investigated, mainly in the context of their effects on the landscape [16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24], soil protection [25][26][27][28], climate change [29][30][31][32][33][34], policies used at a local level aimed at protecting crops and forestland [35][36][37] as well as the land's comprehensive reconstruction through land consolidation works [38][39][40][41][42][43].…”
