Increasing in energy consumption, particularly with the ever-increasing growth and development of urban systems, has become a major concern in most countries. In this paper, the authors propose a cost-effective ZigBee-based building energy monitoring and control system (ZBEMCS), which is composed of a gateway, a base station, and sensors. Specifically, a new hardware platform for power sensor nodes is developed to perform both local/remote power parameter measurement and power on/off switching for electric appliances. The experimental results show that the ZBEMCS can easily monitor energy usage with a high level of accuracy. Two typical applications of ZBEMCS such as subentry metering and household metering of building energy are presented. The former includes lighting socket electricity, HVAC electricity, power electricity and special electricity. The latter includes household metering according to the campus's main function zone and each college or department. Therefore, this system can be used for energy consumption monitoring, long-term energy conservation planning, and the development of automated energy conservation for building applications.

Power electronic device use in consumer increases and power quality monitoring suit essential. This survey paper reviews the various recently used devices such as Remote terminal unit, digital signal processor, microcontroller, etc that monitor the power quality issues. These devices monitor the different parameters of the power system and various events of the power quality using techniques such as Wavelet transform, S-transform, Radial Neural network, etc. The survey also discusses the communication techniques such as wireless, wire-based communication used for the transmission of data from the power system network to the system operator and control techniques such as Dynamic Voltage Restorer, Shunt Active Power Filter, etc. In addition to that, this paper discusses the monitoring of various power quality parameters in the transmission line using a motor load experimental setup. The SIGVIEW software captures the real time signal under different conditions and analyzes the various distributions of the signal such as frequency distribution, probability distribution, etc using MATLAB program.

In this paper, we consider an Energy Consumption Scheduler (ECS) unit inside a smart meter. The function of ECS is to flatten the peaks in the load curve of residential type users. The ECS dually communicates with the user as well as power utility in smart grid real time communication environment. Each user has a specific power capacity limit for their appliances operation . The ECS keeps check and balance condition whenever a user exceeds its power capacity limit. Also the most urgent appliance operations are given priority based on their internal preemption state. By adopting ECS unit, the total peaks in the load curve are reduced up to 33.3%. Also the user's payment to the power utility becomes less due to efficiently managing their appliance operations. Additionally, the cost of per unit energy generation is also reduced by avoiding the peak power plants. Matlab/Simulink is used as a simulation tool for the realization of this model. Index Terms-Smart grid, demand side management, load scheduling.
