Monitoring of Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oils Using Molecular Markers

Abstract: Technological application of essential oils, as natural antimicrobial agents, to reduce the effect of pathogenic microorganisms, requires new methods of detection. The present work evaluated the parameters of antimicrobial activity of the essential oils of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) on two pathogenic strains Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The MBC and MIC values were of 2.5, 25 μl ml -1 , and values of 1.25 and 5 μl ml -1 for the two strains respectively. In this study, an attempt has been m… Show more

“…The antimicrobial effects of es-Evaluation of Addition of Plant Fixed Oil Extracts (Ginger , Maramia, Eucalyptus) on Some Properties of Heat Cured Denture Base Material sential oils have been documented and used in herbal medicine in many countries. (2) Ginger (Zingiberofficinale) is one of the most widely used species of ginger family .Ginger has long history of medicinal use dating back 2500 years in China and India. Recently, medical researchers have verified that ginger contains several bioactive constituents and possesses health promoting properties.…”

“…Variations in RAPD profiles were reported by Hamedo ( 26 ) who studied the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis . The authors found that differences in RAPD profiles could be due to DNA damage after essential oils addition, although the differences could also be attributed to the oligonucleotide used ( 26 ). Changes in bands intensity were found in this study, suggesting no DNA damage.…”

“…REO demonstrated activity against E. coli and Staph. aureus with 1.25 and 5 µmL, respectively [ 38 ]. Another study, by Bousbia et al, found that REO has antibacterial action against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , with inhibition zones 12.5 and 15.5 mm, respectively [ 39 ].…”
