Monitoring of solar spectral ultraviolet irradiance in Aosta, Italy

Abstract: Abstract. A Bentham DTMc300 spectroradiometer is deployed at the station of Aosta–Saint-Christophe, Italy, at the headquarters of the Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPA) and has been performing continuous high-quality spectral measurements of the solar ultraviolet (UV) irradiance since 2006. The measuring site is located in the north-western region of the Alps, on a large valley floor at the altitude of 570 m a.s.l., surrounded by mountains. It is very significant to have accurate measurements in s… Show more

“…The resulting quantity was validated, for the first time globally on a country-wide scale, against ground-based UV measurements (spectroradiometers and broadband radiometers) from the nine Italian stations shown in Fig. 2, selected on the basis of their high quality and traceability to the International System of Units (Diémoz et al, 2011;Fountoulakis et al, 2020). This comparison reveals large and statistically significant correlation (Pearson's coefficient = 0.88, p = 1.7 × 10 −3 ) between TEMIS and the ground-based instruments and relatively low differences (within 10%, comparable to the expanded uncertainties of most of the used instruments and within the uncertainty of satellite products).…”

“…The solar UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface is increasing since the 1970s at middle-high latitude, even if, after the Montreal Protocol (1989), the trend significantly slowed down due to the recovery of the ozone layer [1]. While the UV irradiance is also affected by local factors [2], its rise leads to an increased UV exposure for human beings, and specifically for open-air workers, with growing health concerns, particularly, UV exposure is considered the main cause of skin carcinogenesis [3,4].…”

“…Since 2006 inter-comparison with QASUME is performed on an annual or biennial basis ensuring the high quality of the measurements. Recently the spectral UV dataset of Aosta was re-evaluated and homogenized for the period 2006 -2020 (Fountoulakis et al, 2020a). Measurements of the total ozone are available since 2007 by a single monochromator Brewer (MkIV type) with serial number 66 (Brewer#066).…”

“…For wavelengths longer than 305 nm and SZAs below 75° the standard uncertainty in the spectral UV measurements of Bentham5541 is smaller than 2.5%. A detailed description of the uncertainties of the spectral UV measurements performed in Aosta can be found in Fountoulakis et al, (2020a).…”
