Monoterpene Indole Alkaloids from Palicourea crocea

Abstract: Two new monoterpene indole alkaloids, named croceaines A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the leaves of Palicourea crocea. The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated by means of spectroscopic methods.

“…(Rubiaceae) have been used in traditional medicine to treat cancer (Hartwell, 1971) and are well known for their toxicity towards animals (Gorniak et al, 1990;Tokarnia et al, 2000). Chemical investigations of various species have led to the isolation of alkaloids (do Nascimento et al, 2008;Valverde et al, 1999;Dusman et al, 2004;Ripperger, 1982), triterpenes (Bolzani et al, 1992;Achenbach et al, 1995;El Seedi, 1999), coumarins (El Seedi, 1999), phenolic acids El Seedi, 1999) and an anti-HIV macrocyclic peptide (Bokesh et al, 2001).
