“…These observations indicate that the inhibitory effect of montelukast on MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression may be associated with a decreased number of macrophages in the neointima, their level of MMP expression, or both. Montelukast may also inhibit the function of MMP-9 through a mechanism independent of CysLT1 receptor, since the 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein inhibitor MK-0591 has no effect on MMP-9 activity [22].…”

“…Several different groups have reported CysLT 1 R-induced release of Th2 cytokines, such as IL-4 from cord blood-derived eosinophils (Bandeira-Melo et al, 2002a,b), IL-5 from MNCs (Nabe et al, 2002;Frieri et al, 2003;Faith et al, 2008), chemokines, such as RANTES, from MNCs or platelets (Hasegawa et al, 2010), IL-8 from THP-1 cells (Thompson et al, 2006), and MIP-1␣ and MIP-1␤ or IL-11 ) from epithelial cells. Of interest, LTC 4 and LTD 4 , but not LTE 4 , enhanced TNF-␣-induced MMP-9 production in human MNCs (Ichiyama et al, 2007), an effect that, although inhibited by montelukast, does not seem to be CysLT 1 R-dependent in eosinophils (Langlois et al, 2006). Finally, a combination of LTD 4 and IL-5 or granulocyte macrophage-colony-stimulating factor synergistically induced TGF-␤1 expression in eosinophils (Kato et al, 2005), whereas LTC 4 induced TGF-␤1 production in airway epithelial cells (Perng et al, 2006) or in a timeand concentration-dependent manner in CysLT 1 Rtransfected HEK-293 cells .…”

“…[13][14][15] The main effects of Cys-LT on airways can be seen in The effects of LTA are the opposite of those described for LT: LTA improve peripheral airway obstruction assessed by pulmonary volumes, air trapping, 16 airway resistance, specific conductance 17 and oscillometry. 18 They reduce the number of eosinophils in induced sputum 19 and in peripheral blood of asthmatic patients.…”
