Monthly rifampicin, ofloxacin, and minocycline therapy for generalized and localized granuloma annulare

Abstract: Treatment with pulses of once monthly ROM caused complete resolution of lesions in both localized and generalized granuloma annulare, even in cases recalcitrant to conventional therapy. There were no side effects in any of the patients. Larger trials are needed to substantiate the efficacy of monthly ROM in granuloma annulare.

“…2 However, some also recognized that many GA were unrelated to tuberculosis, but a phenotypic clinicopathological reaction to multiple etiologic agents and various forms of therapy was found. 3 In fact, some cases of GA with chronic pulmonary tuberculosis responding to a specific anti-tuberculosis therapy were reported. 3 Resolution may be related not only to the antimicrobial effects of the anti-tubercular drugs but also to an immunological stimulation, especially of rifampin, on cellular immune response.…”

“…The response of GA to rifampin-based combinations has implications for HS, which is sometimes a granulomatous disease [45,46]. Rifampin might help break down the granulomas of HS and aid in the treatment of HS via this anti-granuloma effect.…”

“…Examples of therapeutic options which have been reported include high-potency topical or systemic corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and antibiotics. Various antibiotics have been proposed as potential therapy for GGA, the most recent being combination therapy with rifampicin, ofloxacin and minocycline (ROM) (Garg and Baveja, 2015) . This article aims to explore the use of antibiotics in treating GGA with focus on the paediatric GA sub-group.…”
