Morbidities, concordance, and predictors of preterm premature rupture of membranes among pregnant women at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, Nigeria

Abstract: PPROM is a major complication of pregnancies and an important cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Management of these morbidities associated with PPROM poses a great challenge. However, women should be informed of these complications.

“…However, the results of this study indicate that the number of group parity with PROM is not significantly different from the number of group parity without the KPD. 8 The results of this study are consistent with the research findings by Patil et al, where the occurrence of primigravids with PROM was 53 cases out of 100 births, compared to primigravids without PROM; 52 cases out of 100 cases -which is not significantly different. 10 This shows that the characteristics of subjects are based on maternal age, gestational age, and parity is a risk factor that causes rupture of the membranes in this study.…”

“…Preterm pre-labour rupture of the fetal membranes (PPROM) is rupture of the fetal membranes prior to 37weeks gestation. PPROM complicates 3% to 8% of all pregnancies [1,2] and is responsible for 20-30% of all preterm births [1] with attendant high perinatal mortality rate of about 54% [3].…”

“…Antenatal care is offered to pregnant women at the antenatal clinic on a daily basis from Monday to Friday. Further details of the antenatal clinic and attendance are as in previous studies [8][9][10]. All consenting pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic within the study period were consecutively recruited for the study using a convenient sampling method.…”
