Morphological and Cellular Features of Innate Immune Reaction in Helicobacter pylori Gastritis: A Brief Review

Abstract: Innate and adaptive immunity are both involved in acute and chronic inflammatory processes. The main cellular players in the innate immune system are macrophages, mast cells, dendritic cells, neutrophils, eosinophils, and natural killer (NK), which offer antigen-independent defense against infection. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection presents peculiar characteristics in gastric mucosa infrequently occurring in other organs; its gastric colonization determines a causal role in both gastric carcinomas an… Show more

“…Approximately, 20% of cancer deaths worldwide are associated with unresolved infection or chronic inflammation; moreover, prolonged inflammation can lead to mucosal atrophy, which in some patients precedes neoplastic development [4]. In particular, unresolved inflammation may create a microenvironment facilitating cellular transformation and chronic tissue damage.…”

“…In addition, it may trigger repair response including growth and survival factors, tissue-remodeling enzymes, and immune regulatory cytokines [5]. However, the role of immune cell populations in gastric cancerogenesis has not been yet fully clarified [4]. Neutrophils, mast cells, eosinophils, and dendritic cells may directly infiltrate foveolar epithelium, whereas the lamina propria is permeated by mononuclear cells, such as lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells [610].…”

“…In particular, infiltration of the monocytes/macrophages into the lamina propria is a major characteristic of H. pylori-induced chronic infection [56]. H. pylori induces the secretion of some pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8 from human monocytes and macrophages.…”

“…Значение его часто недооценивается в клинической практике [1]. Предполагается, что Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) представляет собой специфическую особенность в слизистой оболочке желудка и является основным этиологическим фактором хронического гастрита, гастродуоденальной язвы, аденокарциномы желудка и В-клеточной лимфомы MALT [2,3].…”
