Morphological and molecular identification of three new resupinate species of Hyphoderma (Hyphodermataceae, Agaricomycetes) from East Asia

Abstract: The genus Hyphoderma is one of the most important corticioid fungi worldwide, which causes white rot in wood and plays an important role in forest ecosystems and carbon cycle. In this study, three new wood-inhabiting fungal species, H. marginatum, H. tropicum and H. yunnanense are proposed based on a combination of the morphological and molecular evidence. Hyphoderma marginatum is characterized by the cracking, hard fragile basidiomata having smooth hymenial surface with the upwarping margin, a monomitic hypha… Show more

“…Therefore, they are important strategic biological resources [ 49 , 50 ]. Wood-inhabiting fungi are an extensively studied group of Basidiomycota, but their diversity is still unknown in China, where many of the recently described taxa of this ecogroup were found [ 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ]. Based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis, we described five new species from Yunnan Province, China.…”

“…The corticioid fungi is a large characteristic group of Basidiomycota, which includes a number of species with poroid, smooth, grandinoid, odontioid and hydnoid basidiomata in China , Dai et al 2021, Duan et al 2023, Yang et al 2023, Yuan et al 2023. To date, the accepted species of Xylodon is about 103, and thirty-nine species of Xylodon have been recorded in China (Gafforov et al 2017, Viner et al 2018, Riebesehl et al 2019, Shi et al 2019, Yurchenko et al 2020, Ma & Zhao 2021, Qu et al 2022, but the deep study of Xylodon is still not well known in China, especially in the subtropical and tropical areas.…”

“…Guan are similar to H. sordidum by having membranous basidiomata. However, H. crystallinum differs in H. sordidum by hymenial surface with scattered nubby crystals, larger basidia (21.5-31 × 6-8.5 µm) and larger allantoid basidiospores (11-14.5 × 4-5.5 µm) [10]; H. marginatum is separated from H. sordidum by having cracking hymenial surface, cylindrical cheilocystidia and larger basidiospores (9-10 × 3.5-4.5 µm) [13]; Etymology-sordidum (Lat. ): referring to the sordid white hymenial surface.…”
