Morphological assessment of the cerebroprotective action of lanthanum acetate in chronic cerebral ischemia in rats

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to perform a morphological assessment of the cerebroprotective action of lanthanum acetate in chronic cerebral ischemia in rats. Chronic ischemia was produced in Wistar rats (weighing 160-180 g) by ligation of both common carotid arteries. Ischemic lesions were corrected by intragastric lanthanum acetate (3 mg/kg per day) throughout the experimental period. Ischemic damage to the cortex was assessed morphometrically on histological sections stained by the Nissl method. Lanthanum… Show more

“…It is easier and more active to be utilized by rats because lanthanum acetate belongs to organic salts, and it will not produce obvious side effects for body utilization compared with inorganic salt. Moreover, lanthanum acetate was found to suppress the development of ischemic neuron damage in the rat's cerebral cortex (33). Therefore, in this study, we applied lanthanum acetate to observe its effects on vascular calcification in rats induced by vitamin D plus nicotine.…”

“…Lanthanum sulfate exhibits anticoagulant action. Lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, gadolinium introduced into the zeolite matrix have a neuroprotective effect [3]. It is considered effective to use calcium blockers for reducing the ischemic brain damage.…”

“…It is considered effective to use calcium blockers for reducing the ischemic brain damage. In biological systems, ions of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, gadolinium replace calcium ions, block their entry into cells, and have an inhibitory effect on the development of a calcium induced cascade of pathological reactions in cerebral ischemia [3]. Sorption technology makes it possible to enhance the biological activity of natural zeolites, which play the role of a prolonging carrier of REE ions.…”
