Morphological Characteristics of the Cranial Base in Sagittal Malocclusion

Abstract: The purposes of this study were to compare cranial base morphology in different types of sagittal malocclusion and to explore regular patterns.Fifty-six cases of Class I, II and III malocclusion (age: 10-15 years old) with average angle were selected; this comprised 17 cases in the Angle Class I group, 20 cases in the Class II group and 19 cases in the Class III group. The analysis of the cranial base index for the three groups was performed, including one-way analysis of variance for paired comparison.Signifi… Show more

“…Contrary to our study, Liu, et al19 from Shenyang, China (n=56) concluded that SBa length (mm) was significantly larger in Class II (48.76 mm±3.93) than Class I (45.38 mm±3.95), and it was smaller in Skeletal class III (43.76 mm±2.43) as compared to class I. Also, Panainte et al17 from Tîrgu Mure, Romania (n=44) found SBa length (mm) to be significantly larger in Class II (44.88±3.25) than Class I (42.8±2.5).…”

“…Many patients with mandibular retrognathia present with symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea because of a narrowing of the pharyngeal airway 2) . For this reason, many reports have been made on the relationship between the skeleton and airway morphology of patients with mandibular micrognathia 3,4) . We think that the orthognathic surgery is useful if the treatment can prevent the develop of OSA in the future.…”
