Morphological Diversity among 18 Genitors of Vanuatu Tall (VTT) Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) Population used in Crosses for Hybrids Resistant to Lethal Yellowing Disease Selection at Port-Bouët, Côte d’Ivoire

Abstract: Genetic control by creation of the coconut varieties expressing both Lethal Yellowing (LY) disease resistance and good agronomic performances led breeders to select in Tall populations which contain large diversity, some peculiar palms used as genitors. Thus, 18 genotypes of Vanuatu Tall (VTT) coded from G1 to G18 were described from 30 quantitative descriptors assessed on the coconut organs that are stem, leaf, inflorescence and fruit. The results showed that these 18 VTT genotypes were divided into two agro-… Show more

“…They are grown for their superior longevity, high yield, hardiness, wind resistance, and high genetic variability and diversity of nuts, shell, kernel and oil yield (COGENT, 2017;Koffi et al, 2019;Pandiselvam et al, 2018;Rajesh et al, 2014). The genetic improvement work carried out at the Ivorian Coconut Research Station has made it possible to develop numerous disease-resistant and high-yielding coconut hybrids from crosses between Tall and Dwarf varieties (Bourdeix et al, 1992;Koffi et al, 2014). Thus, 53 cultivars have been developed at the Marc Delorme Coconut research station in order to provide farmers with planting material with high disease tolerance and good agronomic characteristics.…”
