Morphology of bistable 180° phase switches in 18.6‐year induced rainfall over the north‐eastern United States of America

Abstract: Using a novel data presentation technique, bistable 180" phase switches in 18.6-year induced precipitation over the northeastern United States of America are re-examined. It is found that bistable switching in 19-year wavetrains occurred principally at epochs 1898.9, 1917.5, and 1954.7, although some occurred at mid-epoch 1908-2, and at epochs 1936.1 and 1973.3 (epochs are dates of maximum in the luni-solar 18.6-year tide). The 180" phase switch at 1898.9 occurred along the northern Atlantic seaboard, and by e… Show more

“…These observations, familiar to us all, are part of the subject of spectrum analysis. This, and the following paper in this issue on long period deterministic signals in rainfall over the south-central and southeastern United States, are part of a series of papers on these terms in regional data [1][2][3][4][5]. Our results indicate that from 8 to 20 years there are two deterministic signals in climate with periods 19 and 10 to 11 years.…”

“…The phenomenon was subsequently found in a drought index for Beijing, China [47], in air temperature and air pressure worldwide [16], in flood of the St Lawrence and Nile rivers [2,48], in most American rain-gauge records [1][2][3][4][5], and in tree rings from several continents [19]. Currie (unpublished data, 1990) also finds the phenomenon in height of sea level.…”
