Morphology of rectum in broiler chicken and domestic fowl: notability of retrograde peristalsis for water preservation

Abstract: Using light and electron microscopy, the rectum-coprodeum (R-C) segment of two species of chickens was examined. Six domestic fowls (Gallus domesticus) and 12 broiler chickens (ROSS 308) with the same ages were chosen for this study. Intestinal samples were sectioned with stereological procedures for quantitative studies. Sections were stained with Haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) for the light microscopic study. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used for R-C segment. Villi structural variables, microvill… Show more

“…Casotti (2001) reported a similar pattern of villi distribution in the colorectum of house sparrows. It has been established that the ion absorption and water preservation capacity of the large intestine differs among different species of birds (Dehkordi & Shakaram, 2018). Smooth muscle fibres of lamina muscularis mucosae and tunica muscularis of the colorectum ensure contractility in the organ, including retrograde peristalsis required to modify intestinal chime and urine composition in the colorectum (Dehkordi & Shakaram, 2018; Lacy, 2011).…”

“…This means that the intestine's contents can move both in cranio-caudal and caudo-cranial directions (Lai & Duke, 1978;Duke, 1989). Antiperistaltic contractions are an essential adaptation for water conservation in the body (Dehkordi & Shakaram, 2017).…”
