Morphometric model, tissue sampling and test of stereologic procedures

Abstract: SUMMARY Stereologic point counting procedures were applied to estimate volumetric and numerical densities of tissue components residing in and forming a defined, simplified model of human marginal gingiva. This included the quantitative characterization of inflammatory cell infiltrates occurring in the epithelial as well as the connective tissue fractions of this model. The gingival tissue was harvested from defined intraoral sites of 9–15 year‐old children and processed under standardized conditions for light… Show more

“…1). Histomorphometric analysis was performed under higher magnification adopting the methods described by Schroeder and Münzel-Pedrazzoli [17]. A square with 10 × 10 grid points (60 μm distance) was placed over the tissues in the middle of each observed area (Fig.…”

“…A morphometric point-counting procedure was performed using a lattice consisting of 100 light points superimposed over the tissue of decalcified sections at 1000× magnification, as described previously [19]. The tissue within the healing socket was analyzed for the presence of osteoblasts, fibroblast-like mesenchymal cells, adipocytes, erythrocytes, granulocytes, lymphocytes, plasma cells, monocytes and macrophages (M), vascular structures, mineralized tissue components, and unidentified structures (residual tissue).…”
