Mosquito‐borne disease and newborn health

Abstract: While mosquito-borne diseases are currently most prevalent in mid-latitude countries, rising global temperatures are expanding their range. This paper investigates whether one such disease, dengue, harms newborns. Health at birth has been shown to impact economic outcomes throughout life. The empirical design exploits variation in lagged dengue rates in a town's closest neighbors and largest trading partner. The underlying source of exogeneity in this variation comes from two components: the uneven allocation,… Show more

“…Mosquito-borne diseases are spread by the bite of infected female mosquitoes. The main mosquito-borne diseases include malaria, Chikungunya, Zika, Dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, Rift Valley fever, Lymphatic filariasis , and tick-borne encephalitis [ 12 ]. Important vectors of the pathogens causing these diseases are mosquitoes belonging to the genera Aedes , Culex , and Anopheles , widely distributed in Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Health economists have been working on certain aspects of these challenges more than on others, and these different areas of potential contribution have not previously been brought together in one place. Health economics work in this space includes the impacts of extreme weather events (Escobar Carías et al., 2022; Lee & Li, 2021; Ponnusamy, 2022), extreme temperatures (Adélaïde et al., 2022; Cil & Kim, 2022; Masiero et al., 2022; Mullins & White, 2019), air pollution (Giaccherini et al., 2021; Luechinger, 2014; Palma et al., 2022), and vector‐borne diseases (Sanfelice, 2022).…”
