Mothers’ oral health literacy and children’s oral health status in Pikine, Senegal: A pilot study

Abstract: Context and objective As elsewhere, disadvantaged children in Senegal are those most affected by dental diseases and difficulties in obtaining dental care. Studies conducted mainly in developed countries suggest that a low level of mothers' OHL is correlated with poor oral health of their children. The objective of this study is to estimate the level of mothers' OHL in Senegal and its relationto the dental health of their children. Methods This cross-sectional epidemiological survey took place among 315 childr… Show more

“…Parental employment status was found to be associated with dental caries status. These findings confirm previous studies that have shown sociodemographic divergence in different parts of the world [ 16 , 26 , 29 , 68 , 69 ]. Although from this cross-sectional study design it was hard to show causality between factors that contribute to the oral health status of preschool children, the analysis of multivariate models leads us to reach two conclusions.…”

“…OHL has become an important factor of concern in regard to oral health [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. The literature has shown high caries risk among children in association with low parental OHL [ 1 , 6 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. A study revealed that parents with higher OHL showed a negative correlation with their children’s caries experience, with the authors concluding that parents with adequate OHL play an important role in prevention and management of children’s caries experience [ 29 ].…”

“…This complex scenario might be partly explained by insufficient levels of oral health literacy reported among these populations. There is evidence suggesting that the potential effects of individual oral health literacy are not limited to one's oral health status and access to dental services as poor parents' oral health literacy has been associated with worse child oral health status [55]. This is particularly relevant for our study as our sample was predominantly composed by young adult women and relatively large families.…”

“…Prior literature supports the relationship between these central items identified in the mothers’ baseline network and children's dental outcomes. Mothers’ high oral health literacy levels have been associated to lower dmft in children 29 . Similarly, studies reported that parents with increased oral health self‐efficacy are more likely to have children with better dental health and that use dental services more regularly 30 .…”
