Motility and Viability of Spermatozoa of Belgian Blue Crossbreeds with the Addition of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Extract in Egg Yolk Citrate Diluent

Abstract: Crosses between local cattle and pure Belgian Blue cattle often causes birth difficulty because the calf size is too large. In order to avoid this problem, crossbreeding is not conducted with pure Belgian Blue cattle, but with Belgian Blue crossbreeds. In order to support the crossbreeding program between local cattle and Belgian Blue Crossbreeds, it is necessary to study the semen quality of Belgian Blue crossbreeds. This study was aimed to determine the effect of adding tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) extract … Show more

“…In our investigation, administration of lycopene, sweet red pepper, and papaya fruits improved sperm count and sperm motility. This is in agreement with the findings by Bintara et al (37) who discovered that adding tomato extract to an egg yolk citrate diluent might enhance the spermatozoa's motility and viability, among other qualities of liquid semen. By increasing the antioxidant capacity of sperm, lycopene and lycopene-rich foods like papaya and red pepper fruits are thought to improve male infertility.…”

“…Antioxidants were added to extenders can protect spermatozoa from oxidative stress caused by ROS during frozen storage (Allai et al, 2018). Giving an enormous amount of antioxidants can have a terrible impact because it leads to a loss of its effectiveness as an antioxidant and even causes peroxides (Wahjuningsih et al, 2021 ) This research was accomplished by adding Giyanita Rahma Ayu Pramesti, Nur Ducha / Biosaintifika 15 (2) (2023): 237-245 eosin negrosin to the semen that had been placed on an object-glass and making smear preparations (Bintara et al, 2022). This method is used to analyze the viability and evaluate the morphological structure of spermatozoa (Kondracki et al, 2017).Observations were done by color changes that appear on the spermatozoa if the coloring agent can penetrate the spermatozoa and turn them into dark pink color, and if the dye is not able to penetrate the spermatozoa so that the spermatozoa are not stained, the spermatozoa are still alive (Fischer et al, 2020).…”
