Motor Imagery: How to Assess, Improve Its Performance, and Apply It for Psychosis Diagnostics

Abstract: With this review, we summarize the state-of-the-art of scientific studies in the field of motor imagery (MI) and motor execution (ME). We composed the brain map and description that correlate different brain areas with the type of movements it is responsible for. That gives a more complete and systematic picture of human brain functionality in the case of ME and MI. We systematized the most popular methods for assessing the quality of MI performance and discussed their advantages and disadvantages. We also rev… Show more

“…According to certain theories, motor imageryor imagined motions-contributes significantly to the process of planning movements and is a requirement for motor planning. Similar brain activation patterns during actual movements and imagined motions have been shown in an increasing number of investigations utilizing functional magnetic resonance imaging (19) .…”

“…TMS is currently the chosen method for stimulating motor activity in human brain due to its non-invasive and painless nature. Since the mapping accuracy of a single pulse TMS (spTMS) for determining motor area is currently debatable, its reliability is not certain and should be further investigated [4,14,21,22,26].…”

“…If disruption of plan encoding reduces the benefits of mental practice without eliminating them completely, this would evidence the idea of multiple mechanisms involved in motor imagery, such as the PCM + MET fusion model proposed above. Existing work has examined how TMS inhibition of various motor-related brain regions impacts motor imagery performance (see Chepurova et al, 2022 for a review), yielding preliminary evidence that motor imagery is not impaired by disrupting encoding-related regions (specifically the primary motor cortex, Kraeutner et al, 2017 ). However, additional research with other relevant brain regions and a wider range of motor tasks is needed before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.…”
