Motorcortical Excitability and Synaptic Plasticity Is Enhanced in Professional Musicians

Abstract: Musicians not only have extraordinary motor and sensory skills, but they also have an increased ability to learn new tasks compared with non-musicians. We examined how these features are expressed in neurophysiological parameters of excitability and plasticity in the motor system by comparing the results of 11 professional musicians and 8 age-matched non-musicians. Parameters of motor excitability were assessed using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to measure motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) together wit… Show more

“…Averaged values were used to plot recruitment curves for MS patients and controls during heat stress (HS) and thermoneutral (TN) conditions. Recruitment curve slope was determined in each subject during HS and TN conditions from the steepness of the regression line through the four data points (25).…”

“…Musicians showed greater improvement in tactile acuity, following fingertip stimulation and exaggerated changes in motor cortex excitability, following transcranial magnetic stimulation. 7,30 Intensive experience during a period of exuberant neural development not only tunes brain circuits for the immediate processing requirements but appears to imbue brain circuits with the capacity to adapt when presented with future novel experiences, long after the sensitive period has terminated. 31 …”

“…These described an expansion in cortical output maps to muscles involved in the trained task (Pascual-Leone et al, 1995;Svensson et al, 2003), but did not examine LTP/LTD-like effects. Interestingly, professional musicians who undergo years of motor practice have increased recruitment of corticospinal and intracortical connections as well as enhanced synaptic plasticity, possibly resulting from an increase in the number of synapses through synaptogenesis (Rosenkranz et al, 2007). …”
