MOVING BACK vs. MOVING ON: THE CONCEPT OF HOME IN THE DECISION TO REMIGRATE*

Abstract: "This study examines the effect of information and psychic costs on the remigration propensity of the U.S. labor force. Specifically, the study investigates how the proximity of a potential migration destination to a previous residence, and familiarity with this residence, affect information and psychic costs, and thus, remigration propensity. In this respect it is hypothesized that familiarity with, and location of, a prior residence are significant determinants of both the migration destination and the all… Show more

“…She draws four noteworthy conclusions: (1) the more distant the move, the higher is the probability of a repeat move, presumably because information is less reliable at a distance and (2) when unemployment motivates the initial move, return moves are more likely, presumably because financial pressures tend to impair the effectiveness of job search. This finding is similar to that of Herzog and Schlottmann (1982), which was obtained using 1970 Census PUMS data.…”

“…Backward migration appears to be negatively related to TENURE.8 Furthermore, the likelihood of all non-return repeat migration decisions was not influenced by the absence of prior moves (CONTIN). 9 As can be seen in Table I, the average distance of the initial move was approximately the same for returners, onward movers, and stayers whereas backward movers travelled almost twice the distance relative to all other migrant groups. According to our information, the choice of the location for the 1969-70 move placed backward movers and onward movers on average 406 and 914 miles, respectively, away from their 1968 region.…”

“…This second effect of the Di variable is controlled for by partitioning inter-state migration data into those who move closer to the place of birth during the 1965-70 move ("backward moves") and those who move farther away from the birth state (a move "on"). The partitioning was accomplished by use of the formula D' = IH -JH, where IH is the distance from the birth state (H) to the origin state (I, 1965) and JH is the distance from the birth state to the destination state J in 1970 [9]. A backward move is defined for cases in which D'.…”
