Moving Past the One-Size-Fits-All Education-Training Model of Police Academies to the Self-Prescribed Individualized Exercise Prescription Model

Abstract: Law enforcement agencies generally employ the “one-size-fits-all” education-training model. Its effectiveness compared to alternative training models has been under scrutiny. Physical fitness scores of Serbian male (n = 98) and female (n = 79) police cadets during their yearly evaluation were compared. Cadets trained for the first 3 years with the “one-size-fits-all” model. In the fourth year, they self-prescribed an individualized exercise program based on the obtained curriculum knowledge. A two-way MANOVA r… Show more

“…Other authors propose an agreement between the athlete-trainer on goals and the selection of exercises to fit the athlete’s needs, motivations, and abilities ( Wackerhage and Schoenfeld, 2021 ). Some results have shown more outstanding fitness scores and affective responses when participants self-selected exercise conditions ( Parfitt et al, 2006 ) or when designing their exercise program based on their previous knowledge instead of following a standardized exercise program ( Papadakis et al, 2021 ).…”

“…In such situations, possibility for officers to use firearms it is often hindered or unfeasible, which once again confirms the relevance of confident mastery of unarmed self-defense techniques and hand-to-hand combat as a necessary condition for successful completion of the tasks. To address this issue, it is necessary to improve the content of training of police officers in terms of the formation of abilities and skills to use combat techniques [25].…”

“…Linear speed and change of direction speed (CODS) are essential attributes for officers to maintain both personal and public safety (Canetti et al, 2021). The Illinois Agility Test (IAT) and the 300-yard shuttle run are frequently used to measure fitness among police cadets because they mimic a sustained pursuit requiring frequent direction changes (Maupin et al, 2018;Orr et al, 2019;Papadakis et al, 2021). While the IAT simulates a suspect pursuit scenario that requires brief periods of acceleration, deceleration, and CODS over short distances (Post et al, 2022), the 300-yard shuttle run measures similar abilities over a greater distance.…”
