MPEG reconfigurable graphics coding framework: Overview and applications

Abstract: In this paper, we provide an overview of the reconfigurable graphics coding (RGC) framework, in MPEG, and we present the design of 3D mesh coding based on the RGC framework. In 3D graphics, there exist many overlapping object types (e.g., IndexedFaceSet in VRML, Mesh in Collada, etc.) in various formats. In order to design a standard that supports many different object types and their combinations, the MPEG RGC framework is proposed as a unified framework that covers everything, from object type definition to … Show more

“…Despite the fact that the RVC possesses so many distinctive features in comparison to other existing alternative solutions, the wide usage of the RVC framework for different kinds of data-driven systems, especially multimedia (video, audio, image and graphics) codecs [45,46,47,48,49,50,51], also encouraged us to use the RVC framework to conduct our study on the design and development of secure computing applications in the dataflow programming paradigm.…”

“…This standard is composed of the Reconfigurable Video Codec (RVC) [33], dedicated to the specification of video applications, and Reconfigurable Graphics Codec (RGC) [31], dedicated to the specification of graphic applications (primarily 3D mesh decoders). The RMC framework supplies a normative standard library of multimedia coding tools, the Video Tools Library (VTL) for RVC and the Graphics Tool Library (GTL) for RGC.…”

“…digital signal processing, audio and video coding, cryptography, network and packet processing, image analysis, computer graphics. The confluence of these developments has created renewed interest in dataflow programming models, resulting, for instance, in the adoption of a dataflow model (and an associated dataflow programming language) by MPEG and ISO as the foundation for standardizing video codecs [9] and for 3D graphics coding [15].…”
