MR Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Fiber Tracking in Spinal Cord Arteriovenous Malformations: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of the spinal cord in patients harboring spinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of this new technique to determine the displacement of the spinal cord tracts and to correlate morphologic and functional DTI data (fractional anisotropy [FA] and apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC]) with the clinical symptoms.

“…In previous studies, FA also correlated with clinical measures in spondylotic myelopathy (Budzik, Balbi et al 2011) and FA but not ADC metrics were correlated with motor function in SCI subjects (Chang, Jung et al 2010). In patients with poor clinical scores, FA metrics are decreased in cases of spinal cord arteriovenous but the ADC values are variable (Ozanne, Krings et al 2007). FA also correlates with disability scales in neuromyelitis optica (Qian, Chan et al 2011).…”

“…Space-occupying effects and a "steal phenomenon" have also been attributed to the pathogenesis and in some cases it is difficult to evaluate the exact pathomechanism [35]. If the AVM does not present initially with an acute hemorrhage, symptomatology is unspecific.…”
