Multi-Camera Imaging System for UAV Photogrammetry

Abstract: In the last few years, it has been possible to observe a considerable increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) equipped with compact digital cameras for environment mapping. The next stage in the development of photogrammetry from low altitudes was the development of the imagery data from UAV oblique images. Imagery data was obtained from side-facing directions. As in professional photogrammetric systems, it is possible to record footprints of tree crowns and other forms of the natural environment… Show more

“…Aerial imaging, as applied in this study, may also be limited in capturing significantly occluded panicles [75]. The value of applying both nadir and oblique has been demonstrated in other UAS-based studies [76][77][78]. In our case multi-angle images should provide better view of panicles and likely lead to better detection.…”

“…The lens corrections applied to the fisheye GoPro images, although seeming somewhat drastic ( Figure 6), were effective, resulting in an Agisoft model relatively free of distortion ( Figure 8). Our results show that distorted source imagery can be addressed by simple tools that are not labor-intensive (e.g., Hastedt et al, 2016;Wierzbicki, 2018). The Agisoft model built from the corrected imagery was of sufficient quality to permit quantitative comparison with a model generated by a different camera.…”

“…Despite their limitations, GoPro cameras are popular tools for acquiring UAV imagery [24,31,[58][59][60], they are relatively inexpensive, are light enough to be carried by off-the-shelf consumer drones, offer good resolution for their size, and can image large areas at relatively low altitudes (where lower wind speeds make UAV operation easier) [58,[61][62][63][64]. However, ultra-wide-angle lenses require substantial calibration and correction to correct the inherent barrel distortion [33,59]. In this study, we demonstrate that heavily distorted imagery captured with GoPro cameras can be effectively corrected with consumer software, and used to build high-resolution SfM models with little residual distortion.…”

“…Because of low flight altitude and narrow FOVs of cameras equipped on UAVs, UAV-RS often acquires images with small ground coverage area, resulting in the increase of image amount, flight lines, flight cost and data collection time [59].…”
