Multi-directional local search for sustainable supply chain network design

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a bi-objective MILP formulation to minimize logistics costs as well as CO 2 emissions in a supply chain network design problem with multiple layers of facilities, technology levels and transportation mode decisions. The proposed model aims at investigating the trade-off between cost and CO 2 emissions through supply chain activities (i.e., raw material supply, manufacturing, warehousing, and transportation). To this end, a multi-directional local search (MDLS) metaheuristic is develop… Show more

“…They proposed an integrated mathematical model, and the main objectives were to minimise the production, distribution, and customer-satisfaction-related costs, minimise total CO2 emissions, and maximise social responsibility. Eskandarpour et al (2021) proposed a bi-objective MILP formulation to minimise logistics costs and CO2 emissions in an SCND with multiple layers of facilities, technology levels, and transportation mode decisions. The proposed model aimed at investigating the tradeoff between cost and CO2 emissions through supply chain activities.…”

“…Consequently, many studies typically investigate trade-offs within a single sustainability dimension, such as the trade-off between land use and CO 2 emissions (Niu et al, 2020); between two different sustainability dimensions, such as financial vs environmental objectives (e.g. Darvish et al, 2019;Eskandarpour et al, 2019;Saunders et al, 2020) or social and environmental aspects (Galeazzo and Klassen, 2015); between other key OSCM concepts such as supply chain resilience and supply chain sustainability (e.g. Ivanov, 2018;Fahimnia et al, 2018), lean and green supply chains (Baumer-Cardoso et al, 2020) or quality and environmental concerns (Li, 2013); or among all conflicting economic, environmental and social objectives altogether (e.g.…”

“…There may be trade-offs between two various sustainability aspects, including financial versus environmental goals (e.g. Darvish et al, 2018;Eskandarpour et al, 2019) or dimensions associated with society and the environment (Galeazzo and Klassen, 2015); or across all opposing economic, environmental and social goals together (Martins et al, 2019). Additionally, these trade-offs can even occur between different practices in one sustainability dimension (Darvish et al, 2018).With limited resources, it is inevitably not always possible to financially improve environmental or social performance and benefits Although the method of sustainability trade-offs opposes the prescriptions of the sustainability objectives in the context of business, the specification of sustainability preferences seems inevitably an integrated part of business strategies, given that enterprises often miss the chance of serving the concerns of all its interesting parts.…”
