Multi-Frequency Control in a Stand-Alone Multi-Microgrid System Using a Back-To-Back Converter

Abstract: Abstract:A stand-alone multi-microgrid (MMG) system can be formed by connecting multiple stand-alone microgrids (MGs). In the stand-alone MMG system where the frequencies of each MG system are different, a back-to-back (BTB) converter can be used for interconnecting the adjacent MG system. The frequency control performance of the MMG system can be improved by designing the suitable controller of the BTB converter. This study proposes a multi-frequency control in the BTB converter to improve the performance of … Show more

“…Although circuit breakers are usually used for interlinking AC IMGs [8], [11], [14], [15], back-to-back converters (BT-BCs) are more flexible interfaces, which result in a separate frequency control of MGs [10], [13], [17]- [20]. Generally speaking, the control and operation of BTBC-IMGs are similar to the multi-area power systems inter-tied through high-voltage DC [20]- [22]. Both systems similarly lead to frequency stability improvement due to eliminating inter-area frequency interactions.…”

“…With the advancement of power electronic technologies, DC interconnected MMGs are anticipated to be an advanced MMGs configuration due to the favorable controllability and operation characteristics of the DC connection interfaces [14]. The DC interconnection among the microgrids is able to promote the flexible and optimized operation of the MMGs via the advanced control system.…”
