PurposeDoctoral programs play a crucial role in promoting innovation and technology transfer in universities. To design these programs effectively and with a co-design perspective, it is essential to consider all stakeholders involved in the process, including teachers, students and employers. The main objective of this study is to enhance postgraduate programs to improve students' employability.Design/methodology/approachThis empirical study was conducted over a three-year period and employed semi-structured interviews as its primary research methodology. In the first phase, 21 in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with managers from various sectors. The second phase involved 20 interviews, and the final phase of the study included 18 interviews with the same managers from previous phases.FindingsThe study's main results revealed that the international networks, language proficiency and analytical skills of doctoral students were highly valued by employers. The main findings come from companies with doctoral students. Therefore, the skills were identified during the learning experience of the PhD graduates in the companies.Practical implicationsThe study's results can guide improvements in postgraduate program curricula and design to enhance students' employability.Originality/valueThis research presents a novel approach to its findings. On the one hand, the study's conclusions may provide valuable insights for business agents, encouraging them to hire PhD students. On the other hand, it aims to drive necessary changes that promote more PhD students' focus on non-academic careers, creating significant value for research and innovation in the private sector.

This article aims to examine the emergence of a system of multi‐level governance in Higher Education quality assurance during recent decades in Spain, as a particular case within the European Space of Higher Education. Although there is a well‐established multi‐level structure in the governance of this area at the European level, it is not very common to find countries having an internal multi‐level configuration. Most countries have allocated quality assurance at the national level, either concentrating responsibilities into a single agency or allowing competition between accreditation bodies. Thus, the Spanish scenario stands out as very singular model for the governance of Higher Education quality assurance, deserving attention to comprehend the intricacies of its coordination. Here we examine its development over the last two decades, and discuss three factors that have shaped inter‐agencies' relations: first, the sequence of agency creation and their accumulated expertise; second, the role of institutional structures for multi‐level coordination; and third, informal practices related to inter‐governmental relations, and the influence of country administrative traditions. From discussing this case, this article identifies three key lessons for understanding agency relations in multilevel governance environments: first, path dependence significantly impacts‐regulatory interactions over time; second, the Administrative culture, particularly centralist traditions, considerably shapes relationships in multi‐level bodies; and, third, the coordination models in regulatory networks (hierarchical, network or market‐based) tend to reflect those underlying political dynamics.

A tanulmány arra vállalkozik, hogy kritika tárgyává tegye mind 1) a globális egyenlőtlenségek újratermelését eredményező centrális akadémiai nemzetköziesítést, mely figyelmen kívül hagyja egyes földrajzi-gazdasági régiók hátrányos megkülönböztetését, mind pedig 2) a hazai akadémiai minősítési rendszereket (a spanyol ANECA, valamint a lengyel IDUB jó gyakorlatainak kontrasztjában), minthogy azok a rendszerben lévő instabilitás, átláthatatlanság és az informalitások túlzott szerepének következtében akadályozzák a nemzetközi kutatási közösségbe történő szerves integrációt, a felsőoktatási intézmények nemzetközi versenyképességét, és kiszámíthatatlanná teszik az egyéni, kiváltképp a fiatal, kutatók életútját. E két kritikai perspektíva egyesítésével amellett érvelünk, hogy a globális egyenlőtlenségek kritikája és az önkritikus megújulás sürgetése nem ellentétes gondolatok – mint ahogyan azok narratívái a hazai akadémiai diskurzusban gyakran megjelennek –, hanem az egyetlen, valódi változáshoz segítő dinamika két, egymással kölcsönösen összefüggő oldalát írják le.
