Multi-Omics Approach in Amelioration of Food Products

Abstract: Determination of the quality of food products is an essential key factor needed for safe-guarding the quality of food for the interest of the consumers, along with the nutritional and sensory improvements that are necessary for delivering better quality products. Bacteriocins are a group of ribosomally synthesized antimicrobial peptides that help in maintaining the quality of food. The implementation of multi-omics approach has been important for the overall enhancement of the quality of the food. This review … Show more

“…NASA scientists have also explored microgreens in space due to dynamic properties like the availability of oxygen generation, nitrogen, essential nutrients, and photoactive compounds to enhance the morale of astronauts during stretched stays away from Earth ( Kyriacou et al, 2017 ). Several breeding approaches and multiOmics have been explored to augment the shelf life, developmental rate and nutrient content of vegetables and fruits ( Kalia and Singh, 2018 ; Mathiazhagan et al, 2021 ; Reda et al, 2021 ; Valdes et al, 2021 ; AieseCigliano et al, 2022 ; Chakravorty et al, 2022 ; Dutta et al, 2022 ; Kumari et al, 2022 ; Parmar et al, 2022 ; Sahoo et al, 2022 ; Sharma et al, 2022 ). However, it has been observed in tomatoes that the dominance component was higher than the additive component for shelf life ( Pavan and Gangaprasad, 2022 ).…”

“…Biofortification can be done by understanding the genes, pathways and regulatory networks responsible for absorbing and transporting nutrients and adopting genetic means that involve using the natural germplasm during conventional breeding, genetic engineering (through genetic engineering or production of transgenics) and other OMICS approaches. The significance of multiomics, nutriomics and foodomics have been explained for development of desirable genotypes with potential microgreen related traits (shelf life and nutrient content) those will be also helpful for improvement of breeding cycles ( Kalia and Singh, 2018 ; Mathiazhagan et al, 2021 ; Reda et al, 2021 ; Valdes et al, 2021 ; AieseCigliano et al, 2022 ; Bansal et al, 2022a ; Chakravorty et al, 2022 ; Dutta et al, 2022 ; Kumari et al, 2022 ; Parmar et al, 2022 ; Sahoo et al, 2022 ; Sharma et al, 2022 ).…”

“…For example, multi-omics data have been successfully applied in the food industry to extend product shelf life, ensure microbial quality control, and improve the health content of products. 2 These data have also been applied in the biomedical 1 and biotechnology 3 industries. Especially when paired with a well-curated reference genome, omics data will enhance our ability to determine causal relationships from cellular manipulations and help us reach standard industrial goals of improved production titre and cell growth.…”

“…Transcriptomics and proteomics are powerful molecular biology techniques that have shown great promise in advancing our understanding of various biological processes, including those related to food safety [7]. These methodologies have contributed significantly to the identification of potential hazards, the assessment of food quality, and the development of strategies to enhance food safety [8]. Transcriptomics involves the analysis of the whole set of RNA transcripts in a cell or organism.…”
