Multidimensional deprivation in heterogeneous rural areas: Spain after the economic crisis

Abstract: We analyse the changes in multidimensional deprivation in very heterogeneous rural areas in Spain during the 2008 economic crisis using multigroup latent class models. Counterfactual distributions are implemented to identify the factors behind the change in deprivation in the different areas. We find that the economic crisis negatively affected direct indicators of the living standards in rural areas. A wide range of differences appears when specific rural areas are studied going beyond the usual dilemma betwe… Show more

“…Living in a densely populated (or intermediate) area decreases the probability of leaving the deprivation status with respect to the baseline category represented by poorly populated areas, at least for the whole sample. The higher costs faced by urban population may be a possible interpretation for this evidence (see, for instance, Ayala et al, 2021). This is in line with the coefficients observed for home ownership that, although always significant and above 1, are generally higher in rich countries than in poorer ones.…”

“…Thus, deprivation is not only an indicator of ownership of goods and equipment but also of the level of income and poverty of households. As for the works on deprivation in Europe, some evidence suggests a lower level in rural than in urban areas (Ayala et al, 2021). In the paper of Havard et al (2008), relating to the metropolitan area of Strasbourg in France, the peripheral and sparsely populated areas (rural municipalities) that create a peri-urban ring around Strasbourg are characterized by low deprivation.…”
