Multidimensional Determinants of National Food Security in Azerbaijan: an Application of the ARDL Approach

Abstract: Food intake is a prerequisite for human beings to live a healthy life style. The attainment of food security is crucial and is a prime development priority for all developing countries. The inability to provide reliable evidence of national food security has remained a problem for both policymakers and researchers alike. The present study helps fill this gap by incorporating the multidimensional determinants of food security at the national level in Azerbaijan. The specific objectives of the study are … Show more

“…Food inflation (X 3 ) and currency exchange (X 4 ) were used to reveal the influence of changes in access to food and agricultural products on food security. The choice well correlates with the recommendations of Huseynov [53], who used exchange rate, inflation rate, and food trade as variables to identify short-term and long-term effects on food security.…”

“…To the best of the authors’ knowledge, we have not been able to track previous applications of the ARDL method in studying availability or access-related parameters of food security. However, there are abundant examples of an effective utilization of the ARDL in revealing the interplays between domestic supply and imports [ 53 , 95 ], trade balances [ 53 , 96 , 97 ], inflation [ 98 , 99 ], international currency exchange [ 100 , 101 ], and health [ 102 ]. where Δ = first difference operator; = constant term; = short-run elasticities of the variables; i = ARDL model lag order; = error correction term; = error disturbance; t = time.…”

“…Following Deuss [50], Martin and Anderson [51], and Hendrix [52], among others, we assume that the parameters of food trade must be taken into account when studying poverty and agricultural development across developing countries. The choice of AGRX and AGRM variables well correlates with the recommendations of Huseynov [53], Erokhin and Gao [3], and Puma et al [54], who used food trade as a variable to identify short-term and long-term effects on both the development of domestic agriculture and the reduction of poverty in the economy.…”

“…Additionally, Huseynov (2019) showed a pressing need to improve its institutional framework if the Azerbaijan Government aims for sustainable food security. When promoting the food culture in public, our scientists and specialists should develop a new understanding and approaches to the popularization of problems and knowledge to protect people against starving, underfeeding, food poisonings, diseases and appropriate and safe nutrition.…”
