Multielement flame spectroscopy

Abstract: The important role of small amounts of elements in physical, chemical, and biological systems has emerged as methods of analysis have increased in sensitivity. Much of this progress may be attributed to the demands of materials science and biological research and to the availability of modern instrumentation.

“…The basic types of designs and performance characteristics of Rapid Scanning Spectrophotometers (RSS) have been reviewed by Santini, Milano, and Pardue ( 1 ) . Of these, two particular scanning methods have been quite recently discussed and are pertinent to this paper.…”

“…This concentration was determined by extrapolating a plot of the signal-to-noise ratio vs. concentration (for solutions whose concentrations were close to the detection limit) down to a signal-to-noise ratio of 2. These detection limits can no doubt be improved by using a faster monochromator, a silicon intensifier vidicon (1), and a shielded nitrous oxide burner.…”

“…To perform multielement flame spectrometry, a device capable of measuring intensities at different wavelengths is necessary-i.e., a multichannel device is necessary. Two major classes of multichannel systems are temporal multichannel devices and spatial multichannel devices (1). Temporal multichannel devices employ a single detector, where each channel is separated from the previous one in time.…”

“…The operational characteristics of the UV and SIT vidicon tubes and their control unit, the Optical Multichannel Analyzer (OMA), have been detailed in previous reports (3,7,12). Sensitivity comparison data were obtained in the real-time mode by enabling the real-time display switch on the OMA console.…”

“…Recent reviews have discussed the attributes of several new multichannel detector systems, and outlined their application to a variety of analytical techniques (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). State-of-the-art multichannel detectors such as vidicons, photodiode arrays, charge coupled devices, etc.…”
