Multielement Solid Phase Preconcentration Using a Chelating Resin of Styrene Divinylbenzene Copolymer and Application for the Analysis of Seawater and Fish Otoliths by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)

Abstract: A new chelating resin has been synthesized by immobilizing 4–(2–thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR) onto styrene divinlybenzene copolymer and examined for on-line solid phase extraction/preconcentration of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in seawater and fish otoliths for determination by inductively plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A volume of 5.0 mL sample solution was loaded onto the mini column of TAR immobilized resin at 2.0 mL min−1 via a sequential injection system. The optimum pH for multielement preconcentratio… Show more

“…For the REEs, certificate values for CASS-4 and SLEW-3 are not available; therefore the method accuracy was assessed using the concentrations reported by other groups [26,34,35]. With the exception of Sc and Th, the results agreed within the 95% confidence interval with those obtained by chelating resin solid phase extraction [34,35] and iron hydroxide coprecipitation [26]. Precision varied between 3.1% (Ce) and 18% (Lu) for CASS-4, and 1.2% (Pr) and 22% (Th) for SLEW-3 for five replicate measurements.…”

“…Several analytical techniques including flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) (Yilmaz and Kartal 2012), graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) (Yang et al 2009), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) (Silva, Roldan, and Gine 2009) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) (Zereen, Yilmaz and Arslan 2014) have been used for determination of Cd in different samples. Today, ICP-MS has been considered the most powerful technique owing to its sensitivity, multi-element and isotope measurement capability, and wide linear dynamic range.…”

Briefly, 50 mg sub-samples were digested in teflon tubes (4 mL) in concentrated HNO 3 by using a 20-well digestion block (DigiPrep Cube, SCP Science, Champlain, NY).…”
