Multifocal Oscillatory Potentials in the ‘Two Global Flash’ mfERG in High and Normal Tension Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Abstract: increases to 50% with the use of 3 global flashes [15] and to about 75% with a specificity of 83% with the use of a single global flash [16]. The multifocal oscillatory potentials (mfOPs) may also be affected in glaucoma when a global flash stimulus is used. Following a laser induced focal ganglion cell fiber layer defect in the primate, a one global flash mfERG showed fewer and smaller high frequency oscillations, especially in the response to the global flash but also to the focal flash [16]. Recently we obt… Show more

“…Fortune et al [ 58 ] could show that OPs in glaucoma are diminished in the first induced component of the one global flash mfERG, while in the two-flash mfERG Palmowski-Wolfe et al [ 59 ] showed these to be primarily affected in IC2. Compared to standard mfERG, OPs from the global flash mfERG are more sensitive to detect glaucomatous dysfunction in human and experimental glaucoma [ 32 ].…”

“…In view of the increasing number of studies which use mfERG in glaucoma to detect glaucomatous dysfunction [ 15 18 , 20 , 21 , 24 27 , 35 37 ], the mf103 pattern is not just better in regard to structure-function correlation but also as a possibility of having a one-to-one direct correlation between visual field sensitivity and mfERG.…”

“…With an aging population, glaucoma related problems are estimated to expand. Large numbers of patients in the ongoing Dallas Glaucoma Registry do provide adequate data to better understand risk factors, early detection, improved screening targets, treatment options, outcomes and future studies [27].Open angle glaucoma, affects at least 1.7% of the population over 40 years of age in industrial countries [28].To increase awareness and emphasize clinically relevant management issues for patients with ocular inflammation and other ocular symptoms [29].…”
