Multigap pseudospark switch for fair

Abstract: At the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fuer Schwerionenforschung GmbH a new accelerator complex, called Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), is under construction. Its main components are the SIS100 and SIS300 heavy ion synchrotrons. To operate their injection/extraction kicker magnet systems, modulators with pulse-forming networks (PFNs) are necessary. The PFNs will be charged to a high voltage up to 70 kV and discharged via a high-voltage switch. The switch has to handle currents up to 6 kA, pulse durations… Show more

“…Nevertheless, for higher hold-off voltages with a low misfiring rate, a multi-gap PSS is the basic requirement. Multi-gap PSSs have been studied by a few groups, such as at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, to control the fast kicker magnet systems of the SIS100/300 heavy ion synchrotron [10,11] and at CERN for the Large Hadron Collider Extraction Kicker Pulse Generator [12]. In most cases, the design parameters showing development processes for sealed-off devices are not fully disclosed.…”
