The field‐aligned plasma drift in the equatorial ionosphere drives the interhemispheric transport of the ionospheric F region plasma between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. We use the Communication/Navigation Outage Forecasting System satellite measurements, for the first time, to present the responses of the equatorial field‐aligned drift during the 2009 sudden stratosphere warming (SSW). The observations show that the equatorial field‐aligned drift presents a southward disturbance in the morning sector and a large northward disturbance in the afternoon sector and gradually shifts to later local time during the SSW. Further, this new finding of semidiurnal disturbance in field‐aligned drift can well explain the hemispheric differences of the responses of the total electron content to the SSW. Based on the whole atmosphere model Ground‐to‐topside model of Atmosphere and Ionosphere for Aeronomy, it is suggested that the meridional wind can contribute to the disturbance field‐aligned drift. Our results give a new perspective for understanding the ionospheric perturbations during SSWs.

Although sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is mainly a northern high‐latitude phenomena, there are several reports of a concomitant global dynamical response throughout the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Published reports based on model simulations so far attributed such variabilities to changes in global circulation; however, there is no clear explanation of how all these regions are physically connected during SSW events. The present investigation uses wind observations from two ground‐based specular meteor radars over northern high latitudes and midlatitudes and global winds from a high‐altitude meteorological analysis system to characterize global mesospheric circulation anomalies for major SSW events during 2010 and 2013. During these events radar observations and the reanalysis winds exhibited strong southward winds over the two northern midlatitude and high‐latitude stations. By removing seasonal variability from the high‐altitude meteorological analyses, we show that these southward wind anomalies are indeed part of a larger global‐scale circulation, which gets set up during SSW and extend from the Northern pole to low‐latitude regions of Southern Hemisphere in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere altitudes. These results also offer a possible explanation of how low‐latitude ionospheric electrodynamics are influenced by the changes in the circulation set in during SSW at high latitudes.

The present study investigates the effect of the major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event of 2009, on the small‐scale gravity wave (GW) activity in the ionosphere. Small‐scale fluctuations with time periods within the range of 10–90 min observed in Global Positioning System total electron content (TEC) data have been used as a proxy for GW activity in the ionosphere. TEC data from five longitudinally separated Global Positioning System stations located around 60∘N latitude have been utilized for this purpose. In the initial phase of the major warming, when the stratospheric conditions are similar to a minor warming during which the mean zonal flow starts to weaken, the ionopsheric GW activity tends to increase. However, during the peak phase of the SSW, as the zonal mean wind starts to reverse its direction, and after the peak warming, as the winds remain weak, conditions are less favorable for upward propagation of a spectrum of GWs, and thus the ionospheric GW activity is reduced, as seen from the behavior of the small‐scale TEC fluctuations during the latter period of the SSW. Similar reduction in GW activity is also observed in the middle atmosphere (65–100 km) as seen from GWs derived from SABER (Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry) temperature profiles. The reductions in GW activity is more prominent during local daytime as compared to nighttime period. The reduction in GW activity shows a longitudinal variation with some locations showing relatively more reduction in the GW activity as compared to others.
