Multiobjective optimization of biorefineries with economic and safety objectives

Abstract: A new approach for the incorporation of safety criteria into the selection, location, and sizing of a biorefinery is introduced. In addition to the techno‐economic factors, risk metrics are used in the decision‐making process by considering the cumulative risk associated with key stages of the life cycle of a biorefinery that includes biomass storage and transportation, process conversion into biofuels or bioproducts, and product storage. The fixed cost of the process along with the operating costs for transpo… Show more

“…Along this line, Kravanja andČuček (2013) presented two multiobjective approaches for synthesizing sustainable systems for biogas production, both approaches considered a single product and the change over time was not taken into account. El-Halwagi et al (2013) introduced a new approach for the incorporation of safety criteria into the selection, location, and sizing of a biorefinery. Also, an optimization framework for designing a supply chain for bioethanol production from residues of agave bagasse from the tequila processing in Mexico was presented by Murillo-Alvarado et al (2014).…”

“…ElHalwagi (2016a) introduced a sustainability-weighted economic metric to couple economic and other sustainability objectives. El-Halwagi et al (2013) incorporated safety criteria in the selection, location, and sizing of a biorefinery. Noureldin and El-Halwagi (2015) used the concept of synthesis of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen symbiosis networks (CHOSYN) for the design of an eco-industrial parks and ElHalwagi (2016b) proposed a shortcut method for the multiscale targeting and design of CHOSYNs, these works apply mass integration concepts to optimize economic objectives and establish bounds on material use, transformation, separation, allocation, and discharge.…”
