Multiple benign schwannomas of the foot

Abstract: Benign schwannomas occur very rarely in the foot. We report a case of a 46-year-old patient with multiple benign schwannomas of the foot. Eighteen schwannomas associated with the medial plantar nerve present for at least 1 year were excised, with preservation of the involved nerve and disappearance of the patient's symptoms. No signs of von Recklinghausen's disease were found.

“…To our knowledge, the first report of multiple schwannomas of the posterior tibial nerve or its branches was by von Deimling et al, who described 18 distinct schwannomas associated with the medial plantar nerve in a 46-year-old male with 18 months of preceding foot pain and no history or exam findings to suggest NF. 17 Following excision of all 18 histologically confirmed schwannomas, the patient was asymptomatic and without recurrence at 3 years follow-up. 17 Joyce et al reported on a 16-year-old male who had 4 schwannomas excised along the posterior tibial and medial plantar nerves and remained asymptomatic at 1-year follow-up.…”
