Multiple drug resistance of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from aborted women by using serological and molecular techniques in Diwaniyah city/ Iraq

Abstract: Background and Objectives: The study was sought to detect the effect of Listeria monocytogenes on pregnant Iraqi women at Al-Diwaniya hospitals and determination of virulence genes and antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates. Materials and Methods: 360 specimens including blood, urine, vaginal and endocervical were collected from 90 patients with spontaneous abortions. Blood samples were displayed to immunological study and remaining specimens were subjected to bacteriological diagnosis. PCR was used to… Show more

“…L. monocytogenes has been found to be a highly occurring pathogen in several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Mexico [11]. It is found in the environment and is carried by animals [12]. Humans are infected with the bacteria primarily by eating or handling contaminated food or touching contaminated surfaces [12].…”

“…The emergence of multi drug-resistant Candida albicans is prevalent among pregnant and non-pregnant women with vaginitis [ 299 ]. Listeria monocytogenes from patients with spontaneous abortions [ 310 ] and multidrug-resistant clinical Enterococcus faecalis from pregnant women [ 292 ] highlight the need for more precautions and constant monitoring, with the appropriate identification of MDR and susceptibility tests prior to medication. The development of a candidate vaccine and the early diagnosis of MDR infection shall be a better option for protection against MDR infection.…”

“…It is reported as a prevalent pathogen across various countries, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Mexico [ 6 ]. L. monocytogenes is commonly found in environmental settings and is carried by animals, with humans primarily contacting the bacteria through contaminated foods and surfaces [ 7 ]. Consequently, L. monocytogenes poses significant concerns for the food industry [ 8 ].…”
