“…The later development of acute leukemia in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) is well recognized [1][2][3][4][5][6] and has ge nerally been attributed to the oncogenic potential of irradia tion and chemotherapeutic agents. However, in the past year, we have observed three patients who developed non-hemato logic malignancies with multiple myeloma; one with simul taneous renal cell neoplasm and the remaining two patients with adenocarcinoma of the colon and the lung, suggesting that perhaps multiple meyloma itself might be a risk factor for the development of other malignancies.…”

“…The coexistence of plasma cell dyscrasia with leukemia has been widely reviewed [1][2][3]. A relatively large number of cases of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia have been reported in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias including multiple myeloma and Wal denstrom's macroglobulinemia.…”

“…The coexistence of plasma cell dyscrasia with leukemia has usually been described in patients with myeloma receiving long-term cytotoxic therapy [1][2][3][4][5]. The simultaneous occurrence of these two malignancies, unre lated to therapy, is a rare association and points to the possibility of a disorder of the pluripotent malignant stem cell with aber rant differentiation.…”

“…In contrast to Hodgkin's disease [21,24] and multiple myeloma [15,20], there are very few well-documented cases of NHL terminating in AML [3,14,28]. Involvement of the blood, however, is relatively com mon in NHL [9,18,21,27].…”
