“…The underlying reasons can be divided in maternal, fetal and placental causes. Umbilical cord complications are the most common cause for fetal demise in the third trimester [2]. Unfortunately these complications are regarded as unpredictable and unpreventable.…”

“…A longer second stage of labor has been reported in nuchal cord cases, especially in nulliparous parturients and multiple looping nuchal cords. 3,17 This factor has already been reported as a predisposition to birth asphyxia and neonatal death. 6 In this study, tight nuchal cord was a very significant predictive factor for perinatal death.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] In Cameroon, the reported incidence of nuchal cord at delivery varies according to different authors from 5.5% to 16.2%. [6][7][8] Maternal age <20 years, first delivery, absence of obstetrical ultrasound during pregnancy; nuchal cord with more than one loop, tight nuchal cord, duration of second stage of labor more than 30 minutes during vaginal delivery have been identified in a previous study as risk factors of birth asphyxia and subsequent newborn death.…”

“…Compared with single or no cord entanglement, pregnancies with multiple nuchal cords were significantly more likely to have meconium-stained amniotic fluid, an abnormal foetal heart rate pattern during advanced labour, operative vaginal delivery, low 1-min Apgar scores and mild umbilical artery acidosis at birth. 9 In present study, we studied the mode of delivery with two or more loops of cord around neck. We found 1 loop of cord in 40 cases; 27 delivered vaginally, 1 had instrumental delivery and 12 had caesarean sections.…”
