Multiple Open-Circuit Faults Diagnosis in Back-to-Back Converters of PMSG Drives for Wind Turbine Systems

Abstract: In order to increase the reliability and availability of wind turbines, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis are considered crucial means to achieve these goals. In this context, direct drives wind turbines based on permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) with full-scale power converters are an emerging and promising technology. However, several statistical studies point out that power converters are a significant contributor to the overall failure rate of modern wind turbines. Accordingly, this pa… Show more

“…In Ref. [123], a new algorithm was presented for multiple open-circuit fault diagnosis in full-scale back-to-back converters, which are used in the PMSG drives of wind turbine systems. The proposed method is based on a Luenberger observer and an adaptive threshold, which can independently guarantee a reliable diagnosis of the drive operating conditions.…”

“…For instance, power converters are a key component in motor drives and their power switches are the most susceptible to failures, especially in harsh environments. In practice, open-and short-circuit faults of the power switches are the common failures [14]- [16], which lead to an adverse impact on the system performance. Although the SRM can still operate if a phase leg is lost to failure, its electromagnetic and mechanical performance deteriorates to some degree and the rotor is subjected to unbalanced force.…”

“…Most of the literature on fault diagnosis in power electronics converters focuses on actuator faults [8], [9]. Specifically, in [8], a model-based fault detection and localization method is proposed considering only open-circuit semiconductor failures while in [9], an artificial neural network method is proposed for detecting and localizing short-and open-circuit actuator faults.…”

Several works of the same group, [10]- [12], deployed model-free methodologies in order to diagnose open-circuited faults in inverters and unbalanced faults in rectifiers.…”
