Multiple Problem-Solving Strategies Provide Insight into Students’ Understanding of Open-Ended Linear Programming Problems

Abstract: Open-ended questions that can be solved using different strategies help students learn and integrate content, and provide teachers with greater insights into students' unique capabilities and levels of understanding. This article provides a problem that was modified to allow for multiple approaches. Students tended to employ high-powered, complex, familiar solution strategies rather than simpler, more intuitive strategies, which suggests that students might need more experience working with informal solution m… Show more

“…Completion of linear programming graphs provides learners with intuitive visual aids to facilitate understanding of concepts such as feasible region, feasible basic solution, infinite solution (Fernandes & Pereira, 2018). According to Sole (2016) the benefits of using open ended questions on linear programming problems, namely (1) students are able to model real world problems better, (2) challenge students with different abilities, and (3) strengthen skills student problem solving.…”

“…Still others may have difficulty processing information quickly. Open-ended questions can be a valuable tool for use in classes with students having a wide range of abilities (Sole 2016;Kabiri and Smith 2003). Open-ended questions offer students the opportunity to employ the strategy that they understand best (Sole 2018).…”
