Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Filters for Toxin Removal from Cigarette Smoke

Abstract: The fatal diseases and disorders caused by smoking have raised a serious concern for worldwide public health. So for its prevention, it has become very necessary to develop various types of filter material for the removal of carcinogenic and other toxic elements present in cigarette smoke. Herein, we demonstrate a novel filter for cigarettes, fabricated by the insertion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) based thin flexible membrane into the conventional cellulose acetate filter. The developed filter has… Show more

“…FMWCNTs membrane was prepared by a simple vacuum-assisted filtration technique, adopting a similar procedure described in our earlier reported work. 47 In brief, 0.5 g of FMWCNTs was well dispersed in 100 mL of acetone using ultra-sonicator and high-speed homogenizer. After that, the well-dispersed suspension of FMWCNTs was filtered by a vacuum filtration unit, and consequently, a uniform black film was deposited over the Whatman filter paper.…”

“…And besides, cigarette smoke exposure gives the highest concentration of PM 2.5 among the sources of air pollution exposure. 24,25 Therefore, the effects of fiber orientation degree on the surface wettability and the cigarette smoke filtration performance of fiber membrane were investigated, in a comprehensively designed and correctly implemented way.…”

“…Many efforts have been made to reduce the epidemics caused by smoking, but no signi cant success has been achieved so far. Therefore, in order to reduce the impacts of these epidemics, it is very necessary to reduce or eliminate harmful compounds in cigarette smoke [4].…”

“…they exist in the form of particulate matters and vapor. Inhaling this toxic aerosol of cigarette is a signi cant part for development of many diseases such as cancer, asthma and hypertension [4][5][6]. Furthermore, nicotine is one of the main components of cigarette smoke, in addition to being highly addictive, it has also dangerous side effects.…”
