The factors which give rise to the normal relationship between the great arteries and their respective ventricles are unknown. The developmental anatomy of this region was studied by using frontal, sagittal, or transverse serial histologic sections of 17 normal human embryos of Carnegie stages 15-19 from the Carnegie Embryological Collection. Distances and angles between major anatomic landmarks were determined by using computer reconstructions of the serially sectioned embryos, three-dimensional analytic geometry, and Euclidean distance formulas. The findings show that between stages 15 and 19 there is a marked rotation of the axis of the semilunar valves: frontal 121 degrees counterclockwise, sagittal 196 degrees counterclockwise, and transverse 240 degrees clockwise. Simultaneously the great arteries lengthen at a faster rate than the rest of the heart; and there is also an increase in the caliber and wall thickness of the great arteries. These results suggest that the changing rate of growth between the great arteries and the heart is necessary to align the great arteries, the semilunar valves, and the muscular outflow tract septum appropriately with respect to the interventricular septum. Reductions in the rate of growth of the great arteries relative to the heart could, by causing changes in the rotation of great arteries and outflow tract septum, have a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular malformations such as tetralogy of Fallot and transposition of the great arteries.

Biomedical informatics is a maturing discipline. During the last forty years, it has developed into a research discipline of significant scale and scope. One of its subdisciplines, dental informatics, is beginning to emerge as its own entity. While there is a growing cadre of trained dental informaticians, dental faculty and administrators in general are not very familiar with dental informatics as an area of scientific inquiry. Many confuse informatics with information technology (IT), are unaware of its scientific methods and principles, and cannot relate dental informatics to biomedical informatics as a whole. This article delineates informatics from information technology and explains the types of scientific questions that dental and other informaticians typically explore. Scientific investigation in informatics centers primarily on model formulation, system development, system implementation, and the study of effects. Informatics draws its scientific methods mainly from information science, computer science, cognitive science, and telecommunications. Dental informatics shares many types of research questions and methods with its parent discipline, biomedical informatics. However, there are indications that certain research questions in dental informatics require novel solutions that have not yet been developed in other informatics fields.

Pervasive healthcare is an advancing discipline that applies ubiquitous computing features to applications deployed in the healthcare domain. In these applications, ubiquitous computing concerns and health informatics concerns are entwined with base functionality resulting in significant, complex crosscutting code. Domainspecific languages (DSLs) can reduce development effort by providing higher level programming abstractions for domain-specific functionality. We introduce ALPH (Aspect Language for Pervasive Healthcare); a DSL that provides domain-specific constructs for tasks and entities within the pervasive healthcare domain. The DSL is translated into an aspect language and the crosscutting behaviour is weaved. We describe an example implementation to illustrate the level of abstraction that can be achieved using domain-specific constructs.
