Muscle Tone and Body Weight Predict Uphill Race Time in Amateur Trail Runners

Abstract: Background: Vertical kilometer is an emerging sport where athletes continuously run uphill. The aims of this study were to assess changes in vertical impacts caused by uphill running (UR) and the relation between the anthropometric and lower limb muscular characteristics with speed. Methods: Ten male experienced runners (35 ± 7 years old) participated in this study. In the racetrack (4.2 km long, 565 m high), seven sections were stablished. Mean speed and impact value of sections with similar slope (≈21%) were… Show more

“…Furthermore, these methods can be used to investigate how the rheological properties of skeletal muscles are related to specific sports performance. For example, measurements of pre-exercise muscle tone using Myoton have shown that, for some muscles, higher agonist muscle tone (or lower antagonist muscle tone [ 138 ]) predicts better performance both between different individuals [ 139 , 140 , 141 ] and within the same individual in the course of a day [ 142 ].…”

“…Dumke et al (2010) demonstrated that muscle stiffness is related to running economy at a speed that approximates endurance competition. Myotonometric research show biomechanical properties correlating to aspects of muscles’ function and competition results (Kim et al, 2016; Hong et al, 2020; Berzosa et al 2021). Jiménez-Sánchez et al (2018) found, that passive resistive torque of the triceps surae muscle (measured with the isokinetic device) is higher in more stiff, tense and elastic muscle.…”

“…Considering the aforementioned key factors affecting trail running performance and the specific characteristics of VK competitions (i.e., runners are used to face slopes of more than 40%, while the duration of these challenges can range between 29 and 60 min), the physiological and neuromuscular demands are maximized due to the accumulated gradient in competition, since runners must displace their body upward against gravity, increasing mechanical power in a manner proportionate to slope [9]. In this regard, scientific evidence shows a time-dependent relationship for both the development of muscle damage [3,[10][11][12] and altered myocardial function [13] after ultramarathon races, even if the competition is performed at low intensity [14].…”
